Natural Killer cells, known as NK cells, are specialized immune system cells responsible for detecting and destroying abnormal cells. They are part of the body's first line of defense.
NK cells have the natural ability to recognize altered cells without the body having previously identified them. This includes:
NK cells constantly patrol the body looking for cells that are not behaving normally. When they detect an anomaly, they release substances that help destroy those cells.
Normally, the immune system has the ability to recognize cells that behave abnormally. NK cells are part of that first line of defense. Unlike other immune cells, NK cells can act quickly without prior recognition.
In some patients, the activity or number of NK cells may be reduced due to chronic inflammation, immune exhaustion, aggressive treatments, oxidative stress, or disease progression. When NK cells decrease, the immune system may lose part of its natural surveillance capacity.
